UB40

Last night two of the heavy weights of Birmingham’s rich music heritage took to the stage for a special gig. It would have been heavily promoted not that it needed it, these are two bands that have travelled the length and breathe of the planet playing sell out world tours in the process they have captured hearts, minds and souls with their musical conquests.

Steele Pulse and UB40 were gracing the main room of O2 Academy in Birmingham. It was a sell-out gig pack from front to back with Brummies’ of all descriptions, demographic and ages.

It's not often you go to a gig that has four acts on in one night, and you can definitely cut that number in half again if you can say that none of them are filler. Well on paper I can definitely say tonight is one of those special cases where we get the later.

Culture Club Culture Club took to the stage of legendary Eventim Apollo (AKA Hammersmith Apollo, AKA Hammersmith Odeon – (however you remember it, your memories will be fond!). They played a ‘not so secret’ sold out one-off show, to end their run of dates across North America and to make up for their cancelled 2014 UK tour. With a jam-packed bag of hits on the set-list the band covered old favourites and of course some new material too, and they brought the house down!

Yellowcard Since their beginnings in 1997, Yellowcard have considered Less Than Jake to be one of their main inspirations. The two bands were formed within 100 miles of each other and regularly toured the same venues while climbing from nobodies to the stars they are today.

The Specials Thursday night, Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, it must be The Specials. It's cold outside, but inside The Civic, the crowd are warming up nicely for an evening of classic Two-Tone from The Specials and some Dancing with The Rude Boys.

UB40 What a fantastic venue for any artist to play at. The sold out UB40 gig started after some old chart reggae songs to get everyone in the mood for the main event.

Ms Lauryn Hill After stumbling upon a couple of not-so-complimentary reviews of previous tour dates, it seemed appropriate to expect the unexpected from Ms Lauryn Hill’s Tuesday night visit to Birmingham. Despite the cost of tickets, the academy attracted a mixed, multi-generational crowd – a true testament to the timeless, transcendent nature of ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’, Lauryn Hill’s debut solo album – now well over a decade old and still widely cited as a key favorite of many.

Boy George People will know Boy George for many different guises and vices. Long haired make up wearing 80’s pop icon, DJ, junkie and even felon. All add to the colourful persona that is George Alan O’Dowd and contributed to the fact that I was uber-excited about the gig at Brum's premier venue, The Institute.

The English Beat It’s a pleasant Sunday night in Birmingham, following a balmy early spring day in the city, and I wade through the massive crowd gathered outside to see All Time Low on the main Academy stage. Tonight though, I’m here to cover The English Beat, who are here as part of a short UK tour performing on the Academy’s second stage.

Troumaca Tonight at the Rainbow really is a night for Brummies to be proud - as both bands on the bill hail from the Midlands. First up is Dumb a four piece who despite their tender years, perform an accomplished and tight set. It’s clear despite their age that their sights are focussed on big things. They play a series of guitar based ballads, which are reminiscent of late nineties American based pioneers Nirvana, Pixies and The Smashing Pumpkins. Dumb keep it short and sweet with a six tune set that certainly gets the crowd warmed up with a few indie chicks drawn to rock out at the front, and at their crescendo big up tonight’s head-liners Troumaca… ’enjoy’.
