IDLES Luckily it wasn't a portent of doom that the evening commenced with the slogan 'Anger is an Energy' right before my peepers. Some hours later, Idles had done a striking job of recreating this refrain in aural form, and then some.

The Lovely Eggs Tonight The Lovely Eggs play the first gig of their tour to promote the new album, ‘This is Eggland’. It’s all rather special as the venue is ‘The Yorkshire House’, a gig-loving pub in the band’s hometown of Lancaster. The Yorkshire House is a small venue and the tickets quickly sold-out when they went on sale, so we are expecting a classic hot sweaty evening of gyrating bodies and uplifting loud music.

Gogol Bordello The audience for Gogol Bordello were an unexpected mixed bag - the punks, goths, and musos in their requisite uniforms - with the addition of a lot of younger children with parents. GB don’t strike me as the MOST child friendly band, but their infectious energy clearly appeals to a very broad demographic.

Billy Bragg

Tonight's performer has always been outspoken. A revolutionary spokesman for a generation, highlighting social injustice and rallying for the cause. And he's been doing this for thirty odd years. To a pretty much sold out Birmingham Town Hall, and galvanised by recent 'events' welcome to Mr Billy Bragg.

Blondie The stalls of the O2 Apollo in Manchester are full to the brim. It’s Saturday night, and the city is out in force. Blondie are in town, and they have commanded quite the crowd, along with their support act, French band Mustang.

Reel Big Fish Reel Big Fish are often wrongly dismissed as a novelty or nostalgia act by the uninitiated, but there is so much more to them than that. I last saw the California band at Leeds festival 2004 but since then they have lost the integral multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist Scott Klopfenstein to family commitments. This is hardly the Aaron Barrett show though, with long time members Johnny Christmas and Derek Gibbs still sharing centre stage with the irrepressible frontman.

Psychedelic Furs So tonight we're off to Brum to see a band that you could say are a band's band. They inspired a raft of subsequent bands; from all strands of their journey from their formation and roots in punk, new wave or the latter US commercial inspired rock hits they had post MTV. Extended hiatus (or split) in the early 90s, it was the early noughties before they came back together and have toured ever since (with a hint of an album in the pipeline?) - welcome tonight The Psychedelic Furs.

The Mekons The Mekons are a musical institution. Starting off as an arty punk band with attitude at Leeds University in the 1970s, they’ve evolved over the years as a politically and socially-aware collective of musicians expanding out of the punk genre into folk, country, dub and all sorts. They decamped to the USA in the 1990s and have, as they say, a large cult following including one Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy). However, tonight we’re privileged to witness one of only a few reunion gigs being performed by the original 1977-9 line-up of drummer Jon Langford, guitarists Kevin Lycett and Tom Greenhalgh and singers Mark White and Andy Corrigan.

Blink-182 It was summer 2001 and the sun shone down on the Spanish isle of Lanzarote, the cool young lad with his baggy shorts and trucker cap lent me his headphones and thus began the journey of enlightenment that is Blink-182. The holiday romance fizzled out but the love of the punk-rock cheeky ditties did not and here we are sixteen years later, older, wiser and at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena.

Gogol Bordello Leeds on the 5th of July was thronged with gig-goers, mostly for some band called Blink 182, but the more discerning music fan (sorry Blink fans) headed not to the vast shed of the Arena, rather they were popping along to what was about to become the sweatiest place on the planet to listen to some Ukrainian Gypsy Punks do their stuff. Yes, Gogol Bordello were in town!.

Dropkick Murphys Sometime in the mid-late 80s I entered Rock City for the first time for what I always maintained was the sweatiest gig I’ve ever been to (Georgia Satellites). Admittedly 19 year old me was front and centre and having a good old mosh. The older, more damaged, me was stood at the back for this one yet still ended the gig drenched with sweat. It was a veritable sauna in there. Admittedly one with bodies flying everywhere in a joyous celebration of one of the greatest proponents of Celtic/Punk there has ever been. I rather think the young me would have had a new sweatiest gig. Dropkick Murphys have brought their juggernaut of a live show steaming once again into a sold out Rock City.

The Stranglers It's that time of year again. The last day of the 6 Nations Rugby. The F1 Motor Racing season starts shortly. Spring is well on the way. And like a clock that is set the same time every year - it is time to tack a trip to Brum, to the o2 Academy, as the Men In Black are back - say the Brummie annual hello to The Stranglers.

Frank Turner Anyone who knows me will know I love a good name drop so let’s get that out of the way first. I was lucky enough to be involved with a live interview with Frank Turner on Sine FM the afternoon of the gig. I mention this not only for shameful name dropping but also because one of the things we touched on was support acts for the tour. Frank hand picks his support acts and they are invariably worth watching.

The Tubes And so tonight to a packed Robin 2, us little Gig Junkies take a trip to Bilston, to the legendary Robin 2 to see a band who are legendary in their own right for lots of reasons. They have always been standout, different, notorious, way back in the day their '77 tour was banned in the UK due to British censorship. But now 40 years on - and still on form - The Tubes are here tonight - with their 'Mondo Pulp tour celebrating the pulp art era with all their classic hits.
