Moon Duo This is only my second visit to Hebden Bridge’s legendary and characterful Trades Club and already it is one of my all-time favourite live music venues. Tonight the club hosts a psychedelic extravaganza, headed-up by Moon Duo, with this being the last date of the American band’s UK tour.

Love Revisited It’s ten years since the death of Arthur Lee, the genius songwriter and musician behind Love, one the seminal bands of the 1960s. Love's ‘Forever Changes’ is consistently voted one of the top albums of all time. For over a decade, until his passing in 2006, US indie group Baby Lemonade was Lee’s longest-serving Love touring band. Over that period they learnt his repertoire inside out, including playing on the seminal ‘Forever Changes’ live concert at The Royal Festival Hall in 2003, now documented on CD and DVD. They also appeared at Glastonbury that year (find this classic performance on YouTube). Now they’ve reunited, along with original Love guitarist Johnny Echols, to do an extensive tour, bringing Love’s music to a British audience once more.

Psychic Ills US psych band Psychic Ills hit Manchester tonight for one of only two UK tour dates, before traveling on to the continent for more gigs. So it’s a rare chance to see the band in action. Just recently their new album, ‘Inner Journey Out’, has been getting plays and praise on the radio and their star is definitely on the rise.

Wolfmother Wolfmother made their way onto the stage at the rather early time of 8 bells to make sure they finished in time for another modern phenomena, the 10pm curfew. Not that it mattered a jot as the now packed out Rock City greeted the band noisily and enthusiastically.

Black Mountain As a fan of their previous three albums. I’ve really been looking forward to this gig and, fortunately, it turns out to be a fabulous evening. Canada’s Black Mountain are in Leeds for a rare UK appearance to promote their new, fourth, long-player.

Uncle Acid and the deadbeats

Some of the mystery surrounding cult psychedelic-doom-rockers Uncle Acid and the deadbeats is beginning to lift, as publicity photographs of the band finally emerge. But after tonight’s Manchester Gorilla gig, where the band members are shrouded in hair, smoke and shadow, you still wouldn’t recognise them in the street. But the heavy vibes stay memorable and many ear drums will be ringing well through the night.

Leftfield Shock and awe!! Leftfield are playing the O2 Institute in Birmingham... what?! Really?!! For me this was a gig not to be missed. Leftfield's 1995 release 'Leftism' was one of the most important soundtracks of my youth. More than any other record the heady and fascinating rhythms of Leftism, were the perfect accompaniment to a few drinks and 'indoor boogie' getting ready with chums for various heavy techno and psychedelic all-nighters in the heart of Birmingham and it's more bohemian quarters.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Scala was sweaty even before King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard came onstage. In typical London fashion, everybody was complaining about the tube strike and the fact it is far too hot in the capital. Thankfully, the sold-out room shut up as soon as King Gizzard jumped onstage, a snug fit for the seven-piece.

Foxygen Foxygen have released some great songs in their career to date, being at times very poppy, but also managing to be interesting, quirky and experimental. However, a major draw to one of their gigs will inevitably be their reputation for seriously unhinged live performances. It’s also been suggested that this might be Foxygen’s last tour, so there are certainly expectations tonight.

Pond Pond are a band who seem to live in the shadow of fellow Aussies from Perth, Tame Impala. Members of Pond have been in Tame Impala and vice versa. While Tame Impala seem to have got most of the limelight, Pond may be the hardest workers, having made six albums since 2009. And as tonight’s gig demonstrates, Pond are a red hot band, far beyond being an offshoot of Tame Impala.

Ty Segall Like Jack White, Ty Segall is one of a new breed of young musicians who have real talent, as well as charisma, who take the trouble to learn from listening to the rich musical heritage of rock and seem to develop loads of ideas and a real sense of direction as to where they want to be. Still only 27 and with umpteen solo albums / other band collaborations already behind him, Segall is back in the UK playing sold out gigs based around his latest album, ‘Manipulator’.

Steve Cropper Walking into Woody’s bar at The Robin 2, and seeing a genuine legend propping up the bar, chatting with the punters is one of the more surreal moments of my life*. But, as Steve Cropper (for it was he) was to say later “I’m just an old man, having some fun”.
