The Psychedelic Furs It’s a balmy Friday and the South Bank is packed full of tourists watching buskers do Ed Sheeran covers. Meanwhile, over at the Southbank Centre, The Cure’s Robert Smith has curated something a little different to that for this year’s Meltdown Festival. The lineup boasts a wealth of bands, including Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, Death Cab For Cutie and Deftones- yes, as you can see, Robert Smith is bravely giving male musicians the increased platform they clearly need- as well as tonight’s act, The Psychedelic Furs.

Shame I have a lot of feelings about this gig, so this review might get intense. If so, it will only be an accurate reflection of the show itself. As always, I’ll try to make you feel as though you were there, but I don’t know whether I’ll be able to do justice to the savagery and thrill of the evening. Bear with me and I’ll try my best!

Shonen Knife On Sunday night I was pulled back in time, up into space, and transformed into an Osaka Ramone. Didn’t you go? Are you jealous? You should be! All three acts were excellent. They followed one another beautifully, but were diverse enough to give three wildly different experiences.

IDLES Luckily it wasn't a portent of doom that the evening commenced with the slogan 'Anger is an Energy' right before my peepers. Some hours later, Idles had done a striking job of recreating this refrain in aural form, and then some.

Nadine Shah Geordie singer-songwriter Nadine Shah, has been making a real impact with her impassioned ‘Holiday Destination’, one of the best albums of 2017. While the album seethes with anger at the state of the world, Shah has a reputation as a very charming and personable performer who also likes the odd tipple, so we await the start of the gig with interest.

The Waterboys Few bands have changed as much as these guys as they take their musical journey, with that core folk rock mix, over the past thirty odd years. Their self titled album gave us 'A Girl Called Johnny' before 1985’s sky-scraping 'This is the Sea.' their music has continually evolved, from the influential mix of Celtic, gospel, country and rock on the classic 'Fisherman’s Blues', to the fired-up poetic passion of 2011's 'An Appointment with Mr Yeats', 2015's the rootsy, funky 'Modern Blues' and now to 'Out of All This Blue'. Welcome tonight to the Symphony Hall, Mike Scott and his Waterboys.

Squeeze Way back in 1973 two chaps from South London formed a band that saw them christened the ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’. Three decades later they are still performing, now with a massive back catalogue of hits and they're on an extensive run of UK dates starting at the delectable Symphony Hall in Birmingham. So welcome to the 'new Paul and John' - Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook in full band mode as Squeeze.

Psychedelic Furs So tonight we're off to Brum to see a band that you could say are a band's band. They inspired a raft of subsequent bands; from all strands of their journey from their formation and roots in punk, new wave or the latter US commercial inspired rock hits they had post MTV. Extended hiatus (or split) in the early 90s, it was the early noughties before they came back together and have toured ever since (with a hint of an album in the pipeline?) - welcome tonight The Psychedelic Furs.

Candice Gordon Candice Gordon is definitely one of the more interesting and intriguing propositions in the music scene 2017. In the world of singer / songwriters, pop and various takers on indie, Gordon takes her inspiration from the darker side of brooding sonic landscapes beautifully and intrinsically bound together in haunting melodies and lyrical prowess in a post- post punk generation.

The Mekons The Mekons are a musical institution. Starting off as an arty punk band with attitude at Leeds University in the 1970s, they’ve evolved over the years as a politically and socially-aware collective of musicians expanding out of the punk genre into folk, country, dub and all sorts. They decamped to the USA in the 1990s and have, as they say, a large cult following including one Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy). However, tonight we’re privileged to witness one of only a few reunion gigs being performed by the original 1977-9 line-up of drummer Jon Langford, guitarists Kevin Lycett and Tom Greenhalgh and singers Mark White and Andy Corrigan.
