Well there is no better way to spend it than with a local legend who’s given us one of those true Christmas songs we’ve sung along to for all these years. In the Symphony Hall, Birmingham, with a plethora of special guests, and a pretty much sold out crowd in full Christmas spirit akin in Santa hats and festive garb – let us welcome the Roy Wood Rock & Roll Band.

Public Service Broadcasting Public Service Broadcasting arrive in Leeds halfway through the UK leg of the tour promoting their third album, Every Valley. Recorded in Ebbw Vale it’s an album specifically about the South Wales mining industry although it can easily be translated to include not only any UK coal field but any industry in the Western World. It’s a chronological album taking us from when coal was king, through the miners’ strike to pit closures and finally onto how a community copes when its lifeline has been taken away.

Radiohead This is one of the most difficult reviews I can recall being asked to do. People fall into two camps, they either love and adore Radiohead, in which case very few words are needed to tell them how great they were last night (they were likely already there), or the other side are those who don’t “get” the band, they fail to see how visionary they are, pushing boundaries, making you think, not giving you what you expect, and for these people, I have no chance at all to convince them of the greatness of Radiohead in the few words I have.

Arcade Fire The headlines were huge, one of the biggest bands in the world were coming to play in Scunthorpe, yes Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire, in England. Arcade Fire hadn’t played in England for nearly 3 years and now they were breaking that drought with a trip to Scunthorpe. Up to this point dear Reader Scunthorpe had really only been known as the butt of many a joke, but on the 7th June 2017 they were hosting one of the biggest bands on the planet. Who would have believed it !

ARW And so to the Symphony Hall for some symphonic prog rock by the legends of the genre. The foundations of tonight's performance started out half a century ago. Quite literally. When two blokes met in a bar in Soho. And went on one hell of a journey - musically and as a band. The current version of said band is somewhat different - but tonight, for the first time in 25 years, three members of the classic line-up (including one of the original founders) are here to perform for your delectation. Welcome, Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman - aka ARW - with an Evening of YES music.

PJ Harvey The force of nature that is PJ Harvey has not been one to do much touring of the provinces in recent years, but that has changed this year as she undertakes a UK tour centred around her last two albums, ‘Let England Shake’ (2011) and ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ (2016). These albums have been part of a great burst of activity from Ms Harvey, marking a more political stance, examining war, Britain’s history and wider global concerns. These are deeply personal albums, but then so are all of PJ Harvey’s records.

Foals FANTASTIC FOALS! Yannis Philippakis & his Foals are flying right now. The radio & media cannot get enough of their new album, ‘What Went Down’. After winning the NME ‘Best Album 2016’ & “smashing” Wembley a few nights before, I was on the edge of my seat in anticipation for a storming show. I was not let down! It was to be an exhibition of their versatility as they stride closer to confirmation as one of the UK’s best ever bands.
