Anna Calvi Anna Calvi is an artist who seemed to emerge fully-formed with her acclaimed debut album in 2011. Winning early endorsement from luminaries like Brian Eno and Bill Ryder-Jones, she played support gigs for the likes of Nick Cave and The Arctic Monkeys before she had even released an album. The debit album spectacularly demonstrated her abilities as a singer, songwriter and guitarist, as well as demonstrating a trend-setting grasp of style and presentation in the vein of early Roxy Music. Her third album, ‘Hunter’, was released in 2018.

Suede When David Bowie passed away in 2016 I vowed I’d never again miss the opportunity to see a band I loved, when the opportunity presented itself. So I took the grey and long road from Birmingham to Leeds on a Wednesday night to see one of my favourite all time bands, Suede.

Sundara Karma The glam-some foursome return to stage with a collection of their most adventurous and sonically-challenging gems from their discography. Following the recent release of their latest album, ‘Ulfilas’ Alphabet’, Sundara Karma proved they are capable of an even more conceptual feel, both musically and visually - moving more towards the ‘glam rock’ genre, the boys are demonstrating a beautiful fusion of music that feels like the lovechild of Bowie and Queen.

The Good, the Bad & the Queen A historic Victorian pier in Blackpool is not somewhere you would normally expect a high profile gig to take place. Trust the Damon Albarn fronted supergroup The Good, the Bad & the Queen to make the exception.

Florence + the Machine This being the High as Hope Tour, it’s only fitting that Florence + the Machine open the show with the opening track from the latest album of the same name. ‘June’ is strange, beautiful, and builds up into an epic crescendo as she repeatedly wails “I’m so high, I can see an angel!” in her signature falsetto. Our star is the last of her ensemble to make her way down the illuminated staircase on stage, with her musicians receiving a huge ovation as they shuffle onto the stage before her. Stepping quite literally into the spotlight, this sermon is underway.

U2 I have a history with U2 in that I have managed to miss every UK live tour since turning down tickets in 1983 to see them at Leeds Uni. No malice intended, it just never happened for many reasons – I’m not a fan of huge shows where I can’t see the whites of the artist’s eyes without the aid of a TV screen or a second mortgage, so U2 being the stadium filling £££ generating monolithic enterprise, I have avoided them until now. Having lost Bowie, Prince and Tom Petty and missed the chance of seeing them live for the same reasons, I vowed I would make every effort in future to catch a legendary band or artist before it becomes too late.

Bryan Ferry Trying to hold back the years, septuagenarian Bryan Ferry celebrates the re-release of the 45-year-old eponymous ‘Roxy Music’ album and some of his greatest hits at the London Palladium, he still retains the uber-cool style and panache of someone 20 years younger, and the finest sax appeal with Jorja Chalmers in his backing band.

IDLES Luckily it wasn't a portent of doom that the evening commenced with the slogan 'Anger is an Energy' right before my peepers. Some hours later, Idles had done a striking job of recreating this refrain in aural form, and then some.
