Elvana “Sometimes I sound like Nic Cage. Sometimes it’s Matthew McConaughey. If you’re very f***in’ lucky, I might sound like Kurt Cobain. Mostly… I DO NOT sound like Elvis f***in’ Presley! But DO WE CARE!?” Not one bit. A packed house at the O2 Academy2 in Birmingham were firmly behind Elvana: Elvis Fronted Nirvana as they brought their UK tour to the West Midlands on 9 September.

Steve Cropper Walking into Woody’s bar at The Robin 2, and seeing a genuine legend propping up the bar, chatting with the punters is one of the more surreal moments of my life*. But, as Steve Cropper (for it was he) was to say later “I’m just an old man, having some fun”.

Just Talk After fighting our way through the infighting Tories currently polluting the good streets of Brum and dozens of Horrors fans (they were also playing The Institute tonight...The Horrors that is, not the Tories...) the relative peace and tranquillity of The Temple (think of it as The Institute’s loft conversion) came as a blessed relief. Of course you can have too much peace and quiet though.

Burt Bacharach Excitement abounds, and for a Monday night the crowd of gowns and jewels that alight the stairs to the main symphony hall it's clear this is an occasion that's been much awaited. It is in fact the first time that Burt Bacharach has played Birmingham.

Larkin Poe Okay, quick quiz for you...how many famous ‘Poes’ can you name? Go on...if you’re lucky you might just come up with the one, the granddaddy of horror himself Mr Edgar Allen Poe. Even so I was more than mildly surprised to discover that tonight’s band, Larkin Poe (sisters Rebecca and Megan) are actually related (albeit distantly) to the dude behind The Raven, The Tell Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher (serves him right for releasing rubbish records...). Cool eh? Formerly trading as The Lovell Sisters (that’s the sister’s surname, Larkin Poe was their great, great, great grandfather and cousin of Edgar), Larkin Poe have been around since 2010 and tonight they’re fresh from Glastonbury...well as fresh as you can be after spending several days ankle deep in mud and...er...other ‘stuff’...I guess.

Rodriguez Rodriguez tonight is supported by two acts Chloe Charles who gives a confident and sassy performance with strong harmonious vocals, and Dennis Coffey a well seasoned guitarist. In every area of the world that Rodriguez performs he has a different backing band, and for his British stint Coffey's backing then supports Rodriguez on stage with drums, bass and guitar. Coffey leads in nicely and fills the auditorium with a set of real crowd pleasers from the likes of Stevie Wonder and co.

Temples Whoooooooah...hey man, what’s happening? Going to see Temples at The Institute? Cosmic...faaaaar out dude. Okay, enough of the trippy 60s lingo (for now at least, I’m still having flashbacks from this show so frankly anything could happen in the next few paragraphs) but tonight was another of those time travelling gigs that made you question which decade you were living in.

Hawkwind Hawkwind are one of those legendary bands that seem to have been around forever. Much of their reputation comes from their superb live shows, which are audio-visual extravaganzas, featuring psychedelic lighting and dancers. Their current tour showcases their classic 1975 album ‘Warrior on the Edge of Time’ – plus a few other old favourite songs.

Black Market Karma Fickle Twin suck on the septic teat of Anger-Core/Bellicose Snot-Splatter, Depth-Charged Bass and tantrum-fixated guitar Feed-Cack. Distortion being the default setting sound-mix - one suspects they may have got their gear as a job-lot from next door's burnt-down Cash Converters' fire-sale. If not possibly during the actual fire itself.

Miles Kane Still only 25 years old Miles Kane's now in his forth incarnation having started out in The Little Flames before becoming a Rascal then a Last Shadow Puppet (with his best bud Alex Turner). Now he's trying the old solo approach, albeit with an impressive band behind him (including Eugene McGuiness...himself a fine solo talent), a couple of Cherry Ghost and...er...the son of Beady Eye's drummer.
