Bowling For Soup

MC Lars starts the show off with a 3-song set. Warming the crowd up nicely and getting them singing along to ‘Mr.Raven’ a lyrical tribute to Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’.

Next to take to the stage were Nottingham lads Lacey. The crowd seemed somewhat disconnected from the band but eventually the band had them clapping along and even managed to get a sing-a-long to Blink 182 cover ‘Growing Up’.

MC Lars took to the stage again this time singing ‘Signing Emo’ a track about the rise and fall of music in the pop charts.

As quickly as MC Lars left the stage The Dollyrots came out with family, friends and fans (only one can presume) standing side of stage. Once again the crowd seemed disconnected with the band and I say this because of the blank expressions and lack of movement from the crowd.

For one last time MC Lars took to the stage and decided to have a skank dance off asking for 3 people from crowd to join him on stage. Lars picked his 3 and they joined him onstage after fumbling over the barrier. Lars told them who ever “skank’d” the best and longest throughout the next song would win a iRobot key ring. Its safe to say they all came away with a key ring for their efforts which Lars later gave them at the merchandise stand.

Now after all the excitement it was time for Bowling For Soup to take to the stage, they were greeted with uproar of cheers as one by one they came out onto the stage. They kicked the night off right by starting with ‘The Bitch Song’ followed by ‘Emily’ and ‘Ohio (Come Back To Texas)’.

The sold out show’s crowd were lapping up the entertainment from the guys with them throwing plectrums in the air a catching them, to fun antics on stage. Three songs in at the atmosphere was brilliant everyone was enjoying themselves along with the band.

Jaret Reddick took a moment to joke around with bass player Eric Chandler saying “8 year Olds won’t go near him, it’s true I’ve seen it on Buzzfeed” the crowd went quite with murmurs of “ooohhhhhhhhh”. Eric turned to Jaret and said, “Fuck me” with Jaret’s quick response “that’s what they don’t want to do”. Before dropping in to Punk Rock 101.

Jaret once again spoke with the crowd saying “you may have notice I’ve put on a bit of weight since the last time you seen me”, before proceeding to tell the crowd he received a Tweet asking who’s the new guy that’s eaten the old singer?

He then mention about why the band were back making music and touring saying “He was having a rough time and wasn’t sure about his future in music, his future in band but he realised making music and doing it with friend is like therapy, So no more farewell because we’re back”.

They continued to play a mixture of fan favorites one of them being 1985 which seen the stage light up with pyro from beer keg designed holders. Once they finished fans shouted a mixture of things to the band but Jaret said “I cant understand a word your saying it just sounds like STORM THE CASTLE” which later became a running joke throughout the night every time someone shouted at them.

Eric played a mini bass solo before they went into mash up of All The Small Things/Basket Case/Girls & Boys/My Friends Over You/The Middle and to top that off they even played ‘Stacey’s Mom’.

Then when you thought the entertainment couldn’t get any better the band received a Tweet off Nicola’s hen party who were in the crowd and before we knew it Nicola was on stage with the song ‘raining men’ being blasted through the speakers to which members of the BFS’ crew ‘Thor & Hercules’ gave her a strip tease!

To end the night the band finished with ‘Girl All The Bad Guys Want’. It was a perfect comeback show with amazing lighting, Pyro, Smoke Canons and just a down right brilliant atmosphere.

I manage to ask a few fans their opinion on tonight show and they said:

“They just lived up to their reputation, it was filled with was awesome music and humor, they really know how to make you remember you was there” – Sam Griffiths
