Calum Scott has gained large following since he appeared on British Got Talent in 2015. He released his cover of ‘Dancing on My Own’ in 2016 which charted at No. 1 on iTunes in 11 countries, and peaked at No. 2 on the UK Single Chart. He was nominated for a Brit Award for the Best Single. In 2017, he released his first original single ‘Rhythm Inside’ which has over 25 million streams worldwide and the single is part of his debut album, ‘Only Human’.

‘Only Human’ (2018) album stays true to Calum’s colour which highlights his pop, soul and balladic musics in 14 heartfelt tracks, concentrating on love as the theme. The first track on the album, ‘If Our Love Is Wrong’ is on having had found the loved ones but not to be understood by the people surrounding about it; and to the next track ‘Give Me Something’ which is a story of a one sided love. ‘Rhythm Inside’ is an upbeat song, about falling in love at the first sight which everyone can relate to.

You Are The Reason‘ is the track that shows love can overrides everything, and the lyric “I’ll climb every mountain, I’ll swim every ocean, just to be with you…”. Sweet! Calum recently released a duet version of this track with Leona Lewis. The next track ‘Come Back Home’ is filled with the feelings of longing for the loved one, and eagerly waiting for them to return.

The 6th track is ‘Human’ which is the highlight of the album. The song shows the human side, the desire and things that people do on impulse when falling in love. The next track ‘Dancing On My Own’ that we are all familiar with, his incredible take on Robyn’s song that is still a huge hit.

Calum dives into the feelings towards family and friends in the next few tracks. ‘Only You’ is about Calum’s best friend, the person whom he can open up to and be himself, dated way back to his childhood days. ‘Won’t Let You Down’ is a song dedicated to Calum’s sister; to not bottle up the feelings, and giving her the shoulder to cry on when she needs it. ‘What I Miss The Most’ track is about feeling homesick, to remember and miss the faces and things that were left behind, back home.

The track ‘Good To You’ gives me the feel of importance. The lyric speaks directly, the empathy towards other people with what they are going through. ‘Not Dark Yet’ track puts us in the shoes of the person who is struggling and nearly reaching the limit. The album final track is Tiësto Remix of Dancing On My Own, giving it a different feel to the song. It’s hard to pick a favourite of this or the other version!

Overall, ‘Only Human’ is an album that truly reflects Calum’s style. Each track builds up the “love story” from different perspectives. This certainly is my choice of album to listen to on a rainy day or when facing a difficult time.
