DMA’S, the Sydney based trio’s debut album, Hills End, landed on these shores some two years ago. Unashamedly Britpop (specifically Oasis) influenced it became a huge word of mouth success backed with a slew of stunning, jaw dropping live shows. Two years later we come to what is traditionally known as ‘the difficult second album’. The teaser singles ‘Dawning’ and album title track, ‘For Now’ had hinted at a band expanding their influences, maturing and searching for their own sound.

DMA'S - For Now LP

Released at the end of April ‘For Now’ is one of the most anticipated albums amongst the indie faithful. The band could have got away with Hills End Part Two but thankfully haven’t. The opening track, ‘For Now’ owes more to Charlatans baggy than anything. It’s a far more diverse album than Hills End. Yes it has the jangly indie guitar feel of the debut album but in parts it’s pure pop (‘In The Air’ and ‘Do I Need You Now?’) at other times we hear The Smiths, The Cure, The Stone Roses (‘Warsaw’, ‘Dawning’, ‘Lazy Love’) and ‘The End’ is Tama Impalaesque psychedelia. But if you heard any of these tracks on the radio you’d know it was the DMA’s, due in no small part to Thomas O’Dell’s almost angelic vocals.

Hills End was always going to be a tough act to follow, as debut albums go its right up there. But this young Aussie trio have managed it through opening their collective arms wider and embracing not only other influences and genres but by finding their own feet. They have a natural talent for developing hooks, for pulling you deep into a song, for making you want more and that maybe the most exciting thing about ‘For Now’ – it is an exceptional album but you know that the best is yet to come. They have the potential to dominate the scene for a seriously long time.
